Actually, English is a clever language and has roots from the Greek language. The reason why "pterodactyl" starts with a "p", is because the word Pterodactylus originates from the Greek πτεροδάκτυλος (pterodaktulos), meaning "winged finger" and the "p" is from the word Greek word "ptero" (wing). So there you go :)

writeable is actually an acceptable way of spelling it (http://www.thefreedictionary.com/writeable) and as such makes is_writeable an alias.  It would be an alias anyways.

Yes, the english language is stupid, I know.  Why pterodactyl has a p at the beginning, the world may never know.
